Event Guide

Chicago This Week: October 19 to 25, 2026

DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing anniversary, Chicago musicians in conversation, new records on the road and dance floors worth staying out for.

Chicago’s most interesting choices this week turn on how the music is made: DJ Shadow’s samples, the shared ensemble of AACM and Dal Niente, or the live decisions of Wadada Leo Smith’s quartet. There is room for songs, too, from Tokyo Tea Room’s soft-focus pop to Ryan Bingham’s rasp and Greg Freeman’s frayed guitars. Sunday ends with Feldman’s quiet refusal to hurry.

For free neighborhood discoveries, see our Free Listening guide. Film scores, the parade and a queer dance-party return are in Dark Arts Before Halloween.

Monday and Tuesday: Dream-pop warmth and a songwriter’s rasp

Monday and Tuesday: Dream-pop warmth and a songwriter’s rasp

Tokyo Tea Room leads with texture and groove; Bingham puts the voice and the band’s grit in front.

Tokyo Tea Room

October 19 · Lincoln Hall, Lincoln Park · Doors 7 p.m.; show 8 p.m. · 18+, minors with parent or legal guardian · Ticketed

Tokyo Tea Room’s dream-pop has a rhythmic backbone: Beth Dunn’s airy vocals and warm synths are held in place by supple bass and drums. Pick this for a gentle sway rather than guitar overload. Argonaut & Wasp opens the Feel Forever tour stop.

Ryan Bingham and The Texas Gentlemen

October 20 · The Vic Theatre, Lakeview · Doors 6 p.m.; show 7:30 p.m. · 18+ · Ticketed

Bingham’s rasp and character-driven songs gain muscle from The Texas Gentlemen, whose joint album They Call Us the Lucky Ones moves between rockers and ballads. It is the earthy counterweight to Monday’s synth-lit dream-pop. The show has moved from the Riviera to The Vic.

Wednesday and Thursday: A landmark album, then new conversations

Wednesday and Thursday: A landmark album, then new conversations

Shadow revisits one record in depth. Thursday looks outward, to Sylvan Esso’s pairing with Sen Morimoto and a combined AACM and Dal Niente ensemble.

DJ Shadow revisits Endtroducing

October 21 · The Vic Theatre, Lakeview · Doors 6:30 p.m.; show 7:30 p.m. · 18+ · Ticketed

For once, the album is the whole premise: Shadow’s first tour centered solely on Endtroducing puts its breaks, samples and suspended moods under a live spotlight. Open Mike Eagle opens.

Sylvan Esso with Sen Morimoto

October 22 · The Salt Shed Indoors, 1357 N. Elston Ave. · Doors 7 p.m.; show 8 p.m. · 17+ · Ticketed

Amelia Meath’s elastic vocals and Nick Sanborn’s electronic rhythms make Sylvan Esso the song-led choice, with Ow ∞ newly out. Arrive for Sen Morimoto: the Chicago songwriter’s Time Is On Your Side follows the next day, shifting toward intimate songs and psych-soul textures.

AACM + Ensemble Dal Niente

October 22 · Constellation, 3111 N. Western Ave. · Doors 8 p.m.; show 8:30 p.m. · $25 plus fees

This is a collaboration, not a double bill. AACM and Dal Niente members form one ensemble for large-group works led by Zahra Baker, Carlos Pride and Michael Lewanski. The draw is hearing two Chicago musical practices meet inside the same performance.

Friday and Saturday: Noise, improvisation and two approaches to rap

Friday and Saturday: Noise, improvisation and two approaches to rap

Friday contrasts Gilla Band’s abrasion with open-ended improvisation. Saturday’s rap bills divide between East Coast lyricism and a fan-shaped set; Greg Freeman keeps a guitar alternative in view.

Gilla Band

October 23 · Bottom Lounge, West Loop · Doors 7 p.m.; show 8 p.m. · All ages · Ticketed

Dara Kiely’s agitated voice, abrasive guitars and relentless rhythm make Gilla Band a rock quartet with the pressure of a damaged club track. Giraffe, their first new music in nearly four years, gives the return fresh urgency. PISS opens.

Wadada Leo Smith with Stein/Smith/Shead Trio

October 23 · Constellation, 3111 N. Western Ave. · Doors 8 p.m.; show 8:30 p.m. · In person $20.72 including fees

Smith’s trumpet meets Jason Stein’s bass clarinet, Damon Smith’s double bass and Adam Shead’s percussion. The space between those sounds matters as much as their collision: the music takes shape through decisions made together, in the moment. This opens Rembrandt’s new Jazz & Improvised Music Series.

The $10.36 ticket is livestream access, not an in-person seat.

Mobb Deep x Talib Kweli

October 24 · Ramova Theatre, Bridgeport · Doors 7 p.m. · Ticketed

Mobb Deep’s hard-edged Queensbridge sound meets Talib Kweli’s agile, politically alert writing. The attraction is that contrast within East Coast hip-hop: the weight of the production against the movement of the words. Saturday’s Radius show takes a different route, putting part of the song selection in fans’ hands.

Red Bull Setlist featuring Lil Yachty

October 24 · Radius Chicago · Doors 7 p.m. · 18+ · Ticketed

Fans help choose the songs for the U.S. debut of Red Bull Setlist. Yachty’s movement between rap and pop gives that vote some range: the draw is hearing which version of his catalog the audience wants, rather than arriving with a tour set already in mind.

Greg Freeman

October 24 · Lincoln Hall, Lincoln Park · Doors 7 p.m.; show 8 p.m. · 18+ · Ticketed

Freeman’s twang keeps catching on rough, noisy guitars; his songs feel restless even when the melody is clear. With All Set the Bone newly released, the Lincoln Hall return is the weekend’s pick for songwriting with its edges left on. Hello Shark opens.

Sunday: A quiet ending that asks for your attention

Sunday: A quiet ending that asks for your attention

After the weekend’s competing volumes, Feldman gives two instruments time to make small changes feel consequential.

Morton Feldman’s For John Cage

October 25 · Constellation, 3111 N. Western Ave. · Doors 8 p.m.; show 8:30 p.m. · $15 plus fees

Darragh Morgan’s violin and Mary Dullea’s piano move through quiet repetitions and minute changes of color. Morgan has performed the work for more than twenty years. This is not a short, soothing coda: For John Cage asks you to stay with its long duration and hear how your attention changes.

After Dark: Electronic Sounds and Dance Floors

After Dark: Electronic Sounds and Dance Floors

Four contrasting dance floors: swedm brings underground grit to EDM’s melodic excess, Yukimatsu connects sounds you would not expect together, Lake Effect settles into soulful house, and DJ Seinfeld leans into the warmth of house, garage and trance.

swedm: Varg² and jamesjamesjames, with Anna Luna

October 22 · Thalia Hall, Pilsen · Listed event window 7 to 10:30 p.m. · 18+ · Venue listing $29.50; check current tiers and fees

Swedm’s Varg² and jamesjamesjames bring an underground sensibility to the big melodic release of EDM. Their recent Paradise collaboration with Thaiboy Digital gives that idea a current reference point; the Chicago booking puts the duo in the round, with Anna Luna. It is a chance to hear those outsized melodies up close, with the crowd surrounding the decks.

Yousuke Yukimatsu: Autumn 2026 Tour

October 23 · Aragon Ballroom, 1106 W. Lawrence Ave. · Doors 8 p.m.; performance 9 p.m. · 18+ · Ticketed

Yukimatsu’s skill is not simply playing across genres, but finding connections between trance, house, gabber, trap and noise. His 2025 Boiler Room breakthrough made that approach visible far beyond the underground. At the Aragon, choose him for the surprise of the transitions and the chance to hear that restless logic at ballroom scale.

Lake Effect: musclecars and DJ Heather

October 23 · smartbar, Wrigleyville · Doors and music 10 p.m. · 21+ · $20 to $25 advance; $25 door

For a house-centered night, the pairing matters: New York duo musclecars brings a soulful, expansive approach alongside Chicago resident DJ Heather’s fluid mixing. It is a different kind of intensity from Gilla Band or the Constellation quartet, with the night shaped by the DJs’ choices rather than a stage-front performance.

DJ Seinfeld with Shaun J Wright and Valeria Fride

October 24 · smartbar, 3730 N. Clark St., Wrigleyville · 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday · 21+ · $20 to $25 advance; $30 door

Seinfeld’s June album If This Is It reaches from house into UK garage and trance without losing its emotional center. That makes this a timely, melody-forward counterpart to Yukimatsu’s sharper turns. Shaun J Wright and Valeria Fride round out a smartbar bill that connects the visiting name to Chicago’s own selectors.
